A pristine sand-ridge on the southern border of the Croatan National
Forest.
The ridge is frequently burned and contains an extremely diverse herbaceous
flora.
The overstory is not very old (max. ages = 180 years), but more sampling
is needed.
Another old stand (Catfish Lake Bay Rims) is nearby, and may be included
with more
data and visits (pers. comm., Mike Schafale, NC Natural Heritage Program).
The
acreage is a conservative estimate, and a more exhaustive field survey
is needed.
